TECHNICAL INFORMATION

WHAT IS A BEARING?

A bearing is a rotating element found in the tools and machines we use every day. Without bearings, machines would constantly fail due to friction. Below you can find information about bearing types, operating principles, and common applications.

Bearings are generally subjected to two types of loads: axial load and radial load. The load depends on the application. Electric motors and roller systems mainly experience radial loads. Bearings in car wheels withstand both axial and radial loads. For example, a bicycle wheel hub bearing provides low-friction rotation on the axle connected to the rim.

BEARING USAGE

Plastic cage bearings are used to reduce noise and ensure sealing. Metal-shielded bearings are preferred at high temperatures. Self-aligning ball or roller bearings are used where axial clearance exists, and spindle bearings are used in high-speed systems. Bearing operating temperature can vary due to friction and thermal expansion of the shaft.

BEARING MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR

Most bearings are lubricated with grease. One of the main causes of failure is incorrect or insufficient lubrication. Using liquid oil provides higher-quality lubrication. Proper lubrication intervals and suitable additives can extend bearing life.

The oil film layer prevents dry friction and ensures more efficient operation. Lubrication with pneumatic grease pumps increases bearing life. Bearings can be monitored via sound, vibration, or frequency analysis. Clean operating conditions are also critical for bearing longevity.
